What is a hot oil treatment?
Putting oil on your hair or extensions isn't anything knew, if anything the term 'slugging' is a major trend going around the TikTok world. The term slugging generally means lathering your skin or hair in oil & letting it sit for a long period of time. When it comes to your hair, applying an oil daily on ends or as a heavier overnight treatment, can be more than beneficial for dry & damaged locks.
The main difference here, is the heat. When oil is hot or heated, it helps to seal the hair cuticle, which then moisturizes and strengthens locks.
Step by step guide:
*Once a week*
1. Make sure your hair is freshly washed.
2. Brush through any excess knots.
3. Heat 3-6 tbsp of oil in a microwave safe bowl for 10 seconds.
4. Patch test! Make sure the oil temp isn't too hot. You can try a patch test on your wrist beforehand.
5. Application time! Generously apply your heated oil from root to end, focusing on stimulating scalp follicles. If you have a scalp scrubber, this would be the perfect time to pull that out.
6. Let sit. Put on a shower cap, hair towel, or silk scrunchie to pull hair out of face & let sit for about 20 minutes. Wouldn't hurt to let soak in longer, but 20 minutes is a good general rule of thumb!
7. Rinse out + apply conditioner to seal cuticles.
